What is wrong with my 2004 van?
My husband and I bought a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan in February. It only has 53,000 miles on it and it is acting up. It has a hesitation to it, and when I push the gas pedal it back fires. My husband is worried that it is the transmission, but I think that it is either the fuel filter or fuel injector. The check engine light came on, My father-in-law thinks that it is a sensor going bad. What could it possibly be? Do you think that it will be expensive to fix?
We called around and nobody does a free scan. My husband said that we will just have to take it to a dodge dealer and have them scan it. Does anyone know how much it will cost?

go to advance for free scan..guessing doesnt get it…its not tranny..backfire is a timing issue..oxygen sensor.make sure it not overheating…most problems are NOT fuel related..ever been tuned…bad plug or wire.may fix.

Actually, backfiring, usually is a result of poor gas octane. Try using a higher grade gas. All of the problems you described doesn’t sound like the transmission. It is definitely the engine. The sensor would only point out that there is a problem, not the cause of it. It could be the fuel filter or fuel injector, but it could also be a fouled gas line as well.

you have plug a code reader into the comp port and get codes the codes will tell what is wrong some auto stores will do it for free

i own a repair shop and you need to take it to any auto zone store and have them scan the computer to see what codes come up on it,this will tell you if it has a bad sensor in it,this way you wont start buying parts you don’t need for it,the transmission wont make a car back fire,it has to be in the running of the engine its self, and it could either be a bad filter or an injector, and even a fuel pump going out on it,any of those will cause one to back fire, and also if the timing is off on it,this will do it,this is actually the number one major cause of engines back firing, but have it checked to be sure, its a lot better than spending money on parts for things you don’t really need, good luck with it hope this helps.

the transmission is not the problem. most likely you have a timing issue. could be a crankshaft position sensor , i would bet money that its a timing issue though. and as far as bad gas is concerned, newer cars are designed to run on bad gas low grade gas. fuel injected cars will backfire out the tailpipe indicating a timing issue. have it checked out.
